Planning Your Family Photo Session

During your planning meeting, we will ask about the type of family photo session you are planning. For example, is it a large family photo like an extended family photo session with many people or just your own immediate family? We will get some details about your family, such as who will be in the photos, children’s ages, and names. Also, at this time, we will discuss your photo location options. Where do you envision the photo taking place? We can offer suggestions on great photo locations in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, and other spots in the surrounding area. We will also set up the time and date for your photo session. Typically, for outdoor photo sessions in the spring, summer, and fall, we like to do family photos in the evening time when the lighting is best.

We will also discuss what you plan to wear for your family photo, including colours, styles, and footwear. We can offer suggestions on coordinating colours and types of clothes that look best for your photos and will also email you a photo clothing guide to help you decide on what to wear for your photo session.

Lastly, during the planning meeting, we will discuss where you plan on displaying your portraits in your home as well as the cost for family photos.

Choosing What to Wear

Once your session details are in place, it’s time to tackle one of the most important aspects of any family photo shoot: what to wear. Your wardrobe choices can significantly impact the overall look of your photos.

Aim for outfits that reflect your family’s personality without being overly matched. For instance, a combination of soft blues, pinks, and whites works well for a brighter look, more earthy tones can provide a warm vibe and darker colours worn by everyone will draw more attention to your faces. Bringing in textures like knits or denim adds intrigue, while busy patterns can be distracting.

It's important to discuss outfit ideas with us during your planning meeting. They can provide advice based on location and season. For example, light colours are often ideal for spring and summer shoots, while richer hues can enhance autumn photos.  We will also email you a photo clothing guide to help you decide on what to wear for your photo session.

If your session is outdoors, expect a little walking to explore different spots for unique backdrops. This will result in a collection of images that showcase a variety backgrounds, giving you lots of options when it comes to choosing the photos you would like to order.

Your session will typically last around an hour. This timeframe allows for a range of poses and combinations of family members without feeling rushed. Most families enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, which is designed to be fun and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Capturing a Variety of Poses

During the photo session, expect a mix of poses that express your family dynamic. You might start with classic group shots, such as everyone standing together smiling, then transition into candid moments, like siblings walking side by side and interacting with each other.

At the session, we will do a variety of poses and combinations of different family members. Some examples of family poses could be, sitting, standing, walking together and interacting with each other. They can include the whole family, just the kids, mom and dad, mom with the kids, dad with the kids and individuals. Your photo session usually will take about an hour or so, but is never rushed and will a fun and memorable experience.
