There’s something special about summer family photos in Edmonton. The long evenings, warm light, and vibrant greenery create the perfect setting to capture the people you love most. Recently, I had the chance to spend an evening with the Lachner family at Louise McKinney Park, one of my favourite locations in Edmonton’s river valley for relaxed and natural family photography.
Their session was a reminder that the best family photos are about connection, personality, and the special relationships within each family.
A Relaxed Family Photography Session at Louise McKinney Park
Louise McKinney Riverfront Park is one of the most beautiful spots for outdoor family photos in Edmonton. With winding pathways, open green spaces, river valley views, and soft natural light filtering through the trees, it offers so much variety in one location.
As we walked through the park together, the Lachner family quickly settled into the session and enjoyed spending time together outdoors. Including grandma, who was visiting from out of town, into the session made the evening even more meaningful and added another layer to the family story we were capturing.
At Viewpoint Photography, my goal is always to create a session that feels natural and comfortable — not overly staged or rushed. I want families to enjoy the experience while creating images that genuinely reflect who they are.

Why Summer is the Perfect Time for Family Photos in Edmonton
Summer evenings in Edmonton are ideal for outdoor portrait photography. The golden light near sunset creates soft, flattering tones that work beautifully for family photos, couples sessions, and portraits.
The river valley especially comes alive during summer. Locations like Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, Hermitage Park, Hawrelak Park and Whitemud Park provide endless options for natural and timeless family photography backgrounds.
The warm weather and relaxed atmosphere make it easier for families to enjoy the experience and interact naturally throughout the session. Those moments often become the most meaningful images in a gallery.
What to Wear for Summer Family Photos
The Lachner family chose soft blues and light neutral tones for their session, and it worked beautifully with the greens and earthy colours of the river valley. Their outfits felt coordinated without looking overly matching, which helped keep the photos timeless and natural.
If you’re planning your own family photo session in Edmonton or Sherwood Park, here are a few simple outfit tips:
Choose light neutrals, earth tones, or soft pastels
Avoid heavy logos or busy patterns
Coordinate colours instead of matching exactly
Focus on comfort and simplicity
Add texture and layers for visual interest
The right clothing choices help create a cohesive look while still allowing everyone’s personality to shine through.

Family Photos That Tell Your Story
One of the things I love most about being a portrait photographer in Edmonton is getting to document real family stories. Every family interacts differently, and those unique connections are what make sessions memorable.
During this session, there were so many genuine moments — quiet conversations, shared laughter, and simple interactions that reflected the family’s connection. Those are often the moments families treasure most years later.
Family photography is about more than creating beautiful images. It’s about preserving a season of life that changes far too quickly.

Tips for Planning Your Edmonton Family Photography Session
If you’re thinking about booking summer family photos in Edmonton, here are a few ways to make your session feel relaxed and successful:
Choose a location with variety
Parks like Louise McKinney Riverfront Park offer multiple backdrops in one session, from open fields to tree-lined pathways.
Schedule your session in the evening
Golden hour light before sunset creates the most flattering and natural-looking portraits.
Focus on connection, not perfection
The best photos usually happen during natural interaction and movement.
Include extended family when possible
Grandparents and visiting relatives can make sessions even more meaningful.
Keep things relaxed
A calm, easygoing session always leads to more authentic photos.
